Being a makeup artist, I’ll often hear women say they could never wear makeup because they don’t know how to color correct. But color correcting isn’t as hard as it sounds! It’s actually quite easy and super beneficial for everyone. Those who may not know what color correcting is are using an opposite-colored makeup product on areas of the face where you want to cancel out darkness.

Does the color corrector go on before or after concealer?

There is some debate over applying color corrector: before or after concealer? Some people find that applying a color corrector before concealer helps to brighten and cover dark circles and discoloration. Others find that applying concealer first and then color correcting helps achieve a more natural look. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what works best for your skin type and complexion. So, experiment a little and see what gives you the best results.

It really depends on the color you are using and what effect you want to achieve. If you have dark discoloration under your eyes or facial creases, it may help to use a green color corrector first. Green neutralizes red tones. Then apply a flesh tone concealer over the discolored area before applying your regular foundation. If you have sun damage, etc., that tends to be more of a brownish-type spot than reddish in color, try applying your skin tone color corrector over the discolored area before applying concealer and foundation. Your choice may depend on how much coverage you need for these areas – how thoroughly you want to “disappear.”

So, what are color correctors, and how do they work, you ask? Well, let me tell you! Color correctors are designed to neutralize dark circles or any dark spots/spots on your face without altering your overall makeup look. Generally, most color correctors will come in three different shades – green, pink, and lavender. Color correctors are also highly efficient for anyone with dark under-eye circles or pigmentation on their face. Apply the color corrector directly below your eyes just before applying base makeup – I usually set it with a loose powder so that it stays put all day long!
